Hop Skip Pounce

So, although sleepy much of the time, life is still very nice. Walking home today in the golden sunlight of a lovely afternoon I came across these words spray painted on the ground in an alley. I think they are excellent advice, and I intend to do all of them.

I passed out around 4:30 in the afternoon after an all-nighter of colouring the night before (it's a very high-stress kindergarden I go to), and when I woke up dragon cat was asleep in the diamond of space I had made with my legs - soles of my feet together, and knees apart like a frog - and it was a perfect nest for her. My hips were also very well stretched when I tried to stand up.

Then for dinner I ate fresh tomatoes from the garden that I picked today. Look at this dramatic stripy green one! So beautiful, and deliciously juicy and sun-ripened.

In loading the pictures I also came across a picture of this guy:
I am so smitten.
I gave him that onesie! He is a ninja.
A ninja in fabulous stripy pants.

Sweet Sleep and Squirrels

Sometimes I love waking up in bed, with the duvet piled around me and my hair still slightly wet from last night's shower. It feels like the most decadent thing in the world.

Last night a squirrel shared my ice cream with me. Jaja and I got great big cones from Ed's Real Scoop, and sat in the park looking out over the beach and the lake to eat them. A squirrel hopped up on the bench beside me and put both its paws on my leg and looked up at me appealingly. So I broke off a bit of my cone and gave it to him. He politely sat the bench with me and nibbled it, and when it was all gone looked up and me again as if to say, "Might I please have some more?" I dropped the next bit my accident, so he ate it while sitting beside my foot. When he was ready for more he would look up with soulful eyes and reach way up with his little tiny hands to grab the next bit I handed down to him. After a while he hopped back up on the bench to sit with us and we all ate out cones companionably looking out over the water. He ate till he was full, said his thank yous, and hopped off into the park and away. Jaja and I walked home with ice cream smears on our clothes and smiles on our faces.

Four Years, Still Happy

Rafiki and I went camping up north, and people had made wonderful sandcastles on the beach. There were ones with turrets and moats and driftwood fences. There was even a human-sized sand mermaid lying on the beach with her head resting on her arms and seaweed hair cascading down her back. The next day she was joined by a sandwhale, a small one about her size, who was keeping her company. I like playing with campfires especially, and we baked meals on ours, rolling quiche in tinfoil and tossing it on the flames to warm it up, or whole potatoes or peppers stuffed with other veggies to bake them on the hot coals. S'mores made with arrowroot cookies instead of graham crackers are devine and ever so addictive. We ate off paper plates then burnt the plates and giggled a lot.

I'd Sing You A Morning Golden and New

My Dad belongs to the Toronto Field Naturalists and they have been choosing nature-themed songs to sing at their 90th Anniversary celebrations. So Jaja and Dad and I went through the list, singing and listening and discussing options. Three songs particularly made me grin, and for days I've been trying to sing two of them without the benefit of knowing the words or the music.

Everyday as I work in gardens:

Another gardening song, and this one makes me giggle:

Finally, I fell in love with this song. It makes a perfect lullaby, perfect for a raspberry or a large zucchini:
Here's another longer version of it, if like me, you feel the need to listen to it over and over again:

Story time!

Here's another story I wrote and illustrated as a small one. The picture is really how I thought factories were like on the inside - a chocolate factory would be filled with chocolate till about three quarters full, and if they needed caramel there would be a wall in the middle with the other half of the building filled up with caramel. I believed that the Redpath sugar factory we drove past on was filled up with sugar. I imagined sliding on all the sugar in the big slanted pipes that connected the different buildings of the factory, and I thought that there was a little hatch in one wall where you would take your sugar bag, and when you opened the hatch the loose sugar would slide out to fill up your bag. It's just the way things were.

"You put it in the hand and then it go's throo the tuoob and ckrachis it up and euch lil pees turs in to a choklit Bar. and then it grops in to some choklit and carmel and so it Bill-ds up, and then it go theroo a tuoob and the tuoob ad's peenat's and then it comes out a chrap door. and it is cold the coklit maker. "
(translation: You put it in the hand and then it goes though the tube and crunches it up and each little piece turns into a chocolate bar, and then it drops into some chocolate and caramel and so it builds up, and then it goes through a tube and the tube adds peanuts and then it comes out a trap door, and it is called the chocolate maker.)

Walks with Riley

okay, so this post is a few weeks old... but still fresh enough to be tasty!

It was on walks with Riley that I saw my first spring bulbs blooming in full coloured splendour.  There were patches of them all over the neighbourhood. The gardens were flooded with them. Cooled by the lake they were only peeping out their green tips in my neighbourhood. I will get to watch spring twice! Once with Riley, and once waking up in my own garden and sleepy neighbourhood.

One night as we walked along the train tracks, I looked across into a brightly lit window and saw couples ballroom dancing. The hush of the night and the warm light the dancers spun in made it quite magical. night light

I also liked discovering all sorts of wonderful street art everywhere we walked. There was a bull hiding in the bushes, and thumper standing on a bridge. There were whales swimming in the watering shaft of light of an old church window.

I found Batman and Robin kissing on a manhole cover:

And excellent graffiti art for grumpy days...
Grey Bird Looking For The Perfect Beat ...beside street art for days of harmony.

Then one day we went down an alley way and found this garage door (mersheep! mermonkeys!) and some divinely sensible soul starting vegetables under a cold frame. A kindred spirit :)
mersheep! mermaids! mermonkeys!

While at home Basmati waited for us...
